Counselling for Emotional Eating and Binge Eating Disorder

Hi, I’m Emma Murphy, the owner of Sandyford Wellness Centre.

Over my 10+ years as a disordered eating specialist therapist, I developed the Eating Freely Program for Emotional Eating and Binge Eating Disorder.    Working as I did with women and men struggling with emotional eating, binge eating and bulimia, both in a group setting and individually for over ten years, I realized how difficult it was for some clients with binge eating disorder to come forward and ask for help, and in particular for men with any form of eating distress or body image issues.

Did you know that up to 30% of adults seeking weight loss support meet the criteria for binge eating disorder? You will NEVER find the help you need through a diet or exercise program – because it is not about food, it is about feelings. That’s why it is called emotional eating.

Clients with any form of disordered eating have a similar personality type.  They tend to be perfectionistic, high achieving and think in a very black and white, all or nothing way. You are either doing it ALL right, or ALL wrong. This is ironically one of your biggest saboteurs when it comes to resolving emotional eating!

Clients also tend to be seen as the ‘strong’ person in their family or social group, the person everyone else turns to with their problems.  It is therefore very difficult for them to admit that THEY have a problem, and most clients have an absolute fear or dread of appearing vulnerable or needy to people in their lives.

Emotional eating and binge eating is not about food, it’s about feelings. It’s often associated with an old trauma or difficult event, and requires specialist support to separate both food from feelings, and the past from the present.

The good news is that for the past 7 years, myself and my team have been training and licencing qualified health professionals to specialise in working with clients through the Eating Freely Program. You can find a practitioner to work with either in person or online, here in Ireland,  the UK, the USA and beyond.

All  Eating Freely practitioners are fully qualified health professionals, from therapists, nutritional therapists or health coaches, to diabetes educators and medical professionals. Each professional trained by us can help you find true freedom around food, forever.

Visit the Eating Freely website and look through the Practitioner Directory to find YOUR Eating Freely Practitioner. You can choose to work in person 1:1 with a practitioner or blend our online program with four 1:1 sessions and ongoing email support from a Licensed Eating Freely Practitioner, it’s up to you what level of support suits you best.
